Strong Start, Steady Journey: PCC’s General Orientation Welcomes New Students

The PCC Student Affairs and Services (SAS) Office held a General Orientation on August 15, 2025, at the PCC Covered Court to welcome freshmen, transferees, and returnees from the Senior High School and College departments. To accommodate the growing student population, the orientation was held in two batches, with a total of 818 attendees participating in the morning and afternoon sessions. Consequently, Batch 1, held from 8:00 AM to 12:00 NN, included students from the College of Physical Therapy, Respiratory Therapy, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Science, School of Medicine, and Senior High School. While Batch 2, conducted from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM, was dedicated exclusively to Nursing students, who comprise the largest academic group within the institution.

The program commenced with Ms. Lei Charmaigne Espiritu and Ms. Jona Mae Garapo from the Student Affairs and Services Office serving as emcees for Batches 1 and 2, respectively. Dr. Marian Grace A. Gascon, Vice President for Academic Affairs, formally delivered the welcoming remarks. Afterwards, Mr. Jayson Belino, Head of Student Affairs and Services, presented PCC’s Philosophy, Mission, Vision, Core Values, and logo. He emphasized the importance of embodying the P.I.N.E.S. values: Passion, Integrity, Nurturance, Excellence, and Service.

Key student services were introduced by various offices. Ms. Ailyn Lee from the Registrar’s Office discussed student records, timelines, and government financial aid while Ms. Rosegel Lumiwes from Student Accounts explained payment procedures. The Health Services Office, led by Nurse Jane Galvez, outlined the available medical services and safety protocols. Additionally, Dr. Joseph Charles Herero emphasized the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene, stating that their primary goal is to achieve ‘no cavities by the end of the semester.’

Library and ICT services were presented by the Chief Librarian, Ms. Febe Carreon, who highlighted the various benefits available to students, including access to well-organized research dissertations and other valuable resources. Subsequently, the ICT Head, Ms. Genesis Corinth Abella discussed important services such as student Wi-Fi, the PCC portal, Google accounts, PCC identification cards, and other ICT-related support. She emphasized the importance of correct tapping of ID card to help reduce long queues during morning entry. She also explained that while Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the PCC campus, it is intentionally disabled inside classrooms to encourage students to focus solely on their studies.

Guidance Counselor, Ms. Consuelo Pagaduan and Psychometrician, Ms. Jona Mae Garapo provided a detailed overview of the Guidance and Counseling Services, Career Placement, Scholarship and Discounts, and Testing Services available to students. They emphasized the importance of mental health and clarified that their role is to provide initial assessments (“impressions”) rather than actual medical treatment. They also encourage students to seek support without shame, reassuring them that the Guidance Office is a helping hand designed to support their well-being and academic success and not a place of judgment.

Finally, Mr. James Joshua Yang-ed, Student Affairs Officer, presented an overview of school policies and student discipline, student development services, student welfare services, and online etiquette. He emphasized the importance of students being accountable for their actions both inside and outside the campus. Before concluding the program, he reminded students that they must adhere to school policies since they have read and signed the contract agreeing to the school’s rules and regulations.

Both the morning and afternoon sessions covered all the crucial information, ensuring that students are well-informed about the services PCC offers, as well as the policies they must keep in mind throughout their academic journey. The event successfully provided students with essential knowledge about campus life, academic expectations, and student support services equipping them for a successful year ahead.
