The vibrant spirit of community work was brightly displayed in MRR Queen of Peace recently, thanks to the diligent National Service Training Program (NSTP) students of Pines City Colleges, who dedicated their immersion activities to a critical area of public health: handwashing. Beyond merely serving as a requirement fulfillment, this project was a compelling demonstration of youth empowering their community with information, experiential skills, and concrete assistance toward a healthier tomorrow.

On May 3, 2025, NSTP students from the College of Nursing and College of Medical Laboratory Science conducted a community immersion activity in Barangay MRR, Queen of Peace, Baguio City, to fulfill their NSTP-2 requirement. The foundation of the immersion program was an extensive lecture emphasizing the deep significance of proper handwashing. Mr. Zander Agdawe Pulac, together with Ms. Precious Gaerlan, explained the importance of this seemingly mundane action, describing how it serves as a vital barrier to prevent the spread of microorganisms and safeguard the overall health of individuals and the community.
To bring knowledge to life, Mr. Marco Estacio and Mr. Joshua Cebrian performed interactive demonstrations of the proper handwashing procedure. Speaking clearly and patiently, they carefully demonstrated every step—from wetting hands to complete lathering, careful scrubbing, and the essential length of time necessary to effectively kill germs. The children watched closely and followed their example, eager to embrace these vital cleanliness procedures.
Recognizing the value of creating positive relationships, the NSTP students also held fun games, filling the environment with laughter and a sense of belonging. As a tangible commitment to encouraging hygiene, the NSTP students prepared snacks and hygiene kits containing essentials such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and school supplies.
This NSTP community immersion program, built on the empowering message of handwashing, is a testament to the power young people can have in positively impacting their communities. Through the successful communication of vital health information, students exhibited life-saving skills, promoted joyful interactions, and offered helpful assistance—leaving an indelible impression on the children of MRR Queen of Peace. The experience transcended mere program completion and evolved into a meaningful interaction that enriched the lives of both the students and the community, leaving a legacy of soapy solutions and shining smiles. #Precious Gaerlan, BMLS
