PCC Conducts 2-Day Safe & Ready Training Program for Residents of Magsaysay Private Road Barangay

Pines City Colleges – Community Engagement Services, together with the Disaster Control Group and the College of Respiratory Therapy, successfully conducted a two-day community safety training program for 25 residents of Magsaysay Private Road Barangay (MPRB). The program, titled Safe & Ready: Integrated Fire Safety, First Aid, and Basic Life Support (BLS) Training, was held on November 26-27, 2025 at PCC Covered Court.

For three consecutive years, PCC and MPRB have partnered to strengthen community preparedness. In its earlier runs, the program focused primarily on barangay officials and frontline personnel. This year, however, the initiative expanded to include everyday residents, housewives, caregivers, cooks, landlords, and other community members whose daily roles place them close to potential emergencies. This shift reflects the belief that when ordinary citizens are trained and empowered, community safety becomes more robust and sustainable.

The first day of the training, led by the PCC Disaster Control Group, focused on fire safety and basic first aid. Participants learned about different classes of fire, the proper selection and use of fire extinguishers, and the PASS (Pull the pin, Aim the nozzle, Squeeze the lever, and Sweep side-to-side at the base of the fire) technique. Hands-on sessions allowed residents to practice extinguishing controlled fires and safely shutting off LPG tanks. The day also covered practical first aid skills, including bandaging, wound and burn management, and safe methods for carrying and assisting injured individuals.

The second day, facilitated by the College of Respiratory Therapy, centered on health emergencies commonly encountered in homes and communities. Topics included understanding and managing Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), smoking cessation, first aid for choking across all age groups, and Basic Life Support. Participants performed supervised CPR on mannequins, ensuring they gained both knowledge and confidence in responding to life-threatening situations.

Punong Barangay Ms. Debbie Banagui expressed her gratitude, emphasizing the importance of the activity to their community. “This kind of training helps us become more alert and better prepared for unexpected situations,” she said. She added that initiatives like this not only strengthen their response capabilities but also build the confidence of residents, ensuring that everyone knows how to act swiftly and responsibly during emergencies.

Overall, the program aimed to strengthen the barangay’s emergency response capability by equipping residents with practical, life-saving skills. It also sought to boost their confidence in handling urgent situations, increase awareness about respiratory health, and reinforce the ongoing partnership between PCC and MPRB in advancing community well-being.

The Safe & Ready initiative supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including Good Health and Well-Being (SDG 3), Quality Education (SDG 4), Gender Equality (SDG 5), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17). Through collaborative efforts and inclusive training, the program continues to build a more resilient, informed, and safety-conscious community. #Iveeh Amparo
