PCC-RT Attends Ceremonial Destruction of Tobacco Products and Vapes

Students and faculty from the College of Respiratory Therapy participated in the ceremonial destruction and disposal of cigarettes and vapes on August 8, 2024. The event, held at Malcolm Square, was led by the Smoke-Free Task Force of Baguio City. Representatives from Pines City Colleges, other academic institutions, organizations, and government officials also took part in the ceremony. During the event, participants actively destroyed the collected packs of cigarettes. Over the past two years, an estimated two million pesos’ worth of tobacco products have been confiscated from schools and illegal vendors. Additionally, vape products, which are considered hazardous substances, were disposed of accordingly.

Dr. Celia Flor Brillantes, head of the Baguio City Health Services Office, and Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda, Chairperson of the Committee on Health and Sanitation, strongly advocate for a smoke-free city and highlighted the repercussions of tobacco and vape use during their speeches. Student Daztyn Atiwag also delivered a message supporting respiratory therapists, who are front liners in addressing respiratory illnesses and stand behind the smoke-free ordinance. The Smoke-Free Task Force promotes the destruction of harmful products that endanger users, particularly in an era where youth are increasingly engaged in smoking and vaping. The campaign advocates for breaking free from smoking and embracing a healthier lifestyle. # Leann Candace Balba
