PCC Students reflect on Life’s Value and Mental Health: Suicide Awareness Seminar — September 25, 2025

Students from various programs gathered at the PCC Covered Court for a reflective and eye-opening seminar titled “Promote Mental Health, Value Life, and Prevent the Risk of Suicide.” The event brought together participants from BSN, BMLS, BSP, BSPT, DDM, and the Senior High School (SHS) department in a harmonious effort to raise awareness on mental health and suicide prevention.

The seminar opened with Dr. Marian Gascon, Vice President for Academic Affairs, delivering warm welcome remarks. Her message set the tone for the day, encouraging students to take mental health seriously and be part of a caring and informed community.

The first part of the seminar featured guest speaker Ms. Rizza Alma Evasco who gave a lecture-discussion on common mental health concerns among the youth. Focusing on depression and anxiety, she discussed their meanings and symptoms, offering insight into how these conditions often manifest in students’ daily lives. Her talk highlighted the importance of understanding mental health not only as a personal issue but also as a shared responsibility.

In the second part of the seminar, the focus shifted to suicide awareness, prevention, and intervention. Ms. Consuelo Pagaduan, Guidance Counselor, began the discussion with an introduction to the topic, helping participants understand the seriousness and urgency of suicide as a public health concern. Following this, Ms. Jona Mae Garapo, Psychometrician, took the floor to present the warning signs of suicide. Her presentation aimed to equip students with the ability to recognize early signals in themselves or others, which could be important in preventing suicide.

Ms. Pagaduan then returned to handle the next topics. She addressed the question, “What do people at risk of suicide need?” Her answer emphasized presence, empathy, and understanding. She also gave guidance on what to do or say and what not to do or say to people at risk, reminding everyone that words and actions matter deeply when someone is struggling.

In her final topic, Ms. Pagaduan talked about mental health, self-care, and support strategies for people at risk of suicide. She noted the role of community, communication, and consistent care in helping individuals move forward. Supporting the Guidance in the successful execution of the seminar were the PiCCASO officers and members. They help by preparing ribbons symbolizing suicide prevention, a visual reminder of solidarity and awareness. They also created a commemorative tarp for hand stamps, featuring the powerful message: “Hand in hand, we’ll withstand.” This symbolic activity allowed participants to leave their handprints as a commitment to stand together in support of mental health advocacy.

Throughout the seminar, important messages resonated with participants: “Hindi dapat sila iiwan,” “Don’t invalidate their feelings,” and “Be mindful on what they feel.” These reminders urged students to become more sensitive and compassionate, especially toward those quietly battling mental issues.

By the end of the seminar, PCC students left not newly enlightened but ignited with renewed peurpose. The experience offered a deeper understanding of the value of life and the importance of mental well-being. It was a day that reminded everyone that behind every smile, there may be a story and that care, awareness, and action can save lives. #Alysa Joyce Bulayo
